Everything I learned as a freelancer

Everything I learned as a freelancer

If you found value in this thread you will most likely enjoy my tweets too so make sure you follow me on Twitter for more information about web development and how to improve as a developer.

You want to start freelancing?

I started doing this 2 months ago when I knew nothing

Now I'm on my way to building a successful freelancing business

Here is everything I learned

First, here is what I achieved in these 2 months of freelancing

  • my strategy

twitter.com/VladPasca5/status/1450801786261..

Now let's continue with the good stuff:

Freelancing it's a lot easier than you think

You don't need to be an expert to succeed as a freelancer

If you can get results for your clients that's more than enough

If you're thinking about starting freelancing, you are probably ready

Freelancing is all about getting results for your clients

If you can do that, they will pay you

But first, focus on getting results

The money will come after

Social proof is everything

When you're just starting out, no one will trust you

That's why you need to work for free at the beginning

By doing this you will:

  • Get more experience
  • Get social proof

Outreach is the one that gets you clients

In the beginning, no one will come to you

You need to find those clients and contact them

More outreach = more clients

In the beginning focus only on one channel of outreach

Don't do Twitter DMs, cold emails, and LinkedIn all at once

Start with one of them and master it

Always ask for a testimonial

You never have enough social proof

Build a simple portfolio where you can show your past work and the social proof you have

Add a link to it in your bio

Talk about your business

If you don't do it, no one else will do it for you

Overdeliver

In the beginning, this is key

This will make people come back to you

Don't focus on money

You won't make a lot of money at the beginning

But that is obvious

Wait until things start to compound

Don't use platforms like Fiverr or Upwork

Use social media instead

Don't fight for $5 projects

Build rapport first

Before you reach out to a potential client engage a bit with their stuff

Buy their products

Learn more about them

Build something for them for free

This will boost your chances of closing that client

Do something to stand up

Why would someone hire you instead of anyone else on the internet?

Find an answer to this question asap

Follow up

If someone doesn't reply to your message/email after a few days follow up

It's mindblowing how many clients I closed after following up

Aim for monthly recurrent revenue

Offer a service like:

  • Facebook ads
  • Web maintenance
  • Email marketing
  • Social media marketing

In addition to your main one

Share your work online

Join a community of freelancing

Connect with them

Refer clients to them and build a network

I hope found this useful and if you did please let me know. If you have any questions feel free to DM me on Twitter.
